Qualcomm’s 3rd Gen Oryon CPU Cores En Route to Snapdragon X “AI PC” Platforms by 2025, 2nd Gen Focusing on Mobile Segments.
Qualcomm's 2nd Generation Oryon CPU cores will focus on the mobile sector, while the 3rd Generation is intended for Snapdragon X "AI PC" platforms by 2025.
In a recent “Investor Day” conference, Qualcomm indicated its plans to enhance its PC operations by offering "more compelling" options.
The company acknowledged a "slight slack" in business and adjusted its "50% market share" target from 2027 to 2029, citing the need for stronger foundational support. By 2029, Qualcomm anticipates securing a "30%-50%" market share in the "non-x86 AI notebook" sector, targeting the ARM market directly and aiming to compete with Apple while setting aside ambitions for x86 dominance.
Notably, Qualcomm is targeting $4 billion in revenue from the AI PC sector by 2029, equating to an approximate year-over-year revenue of $1 billion. These projections are significant, particularly as competitors like Intel and AMD can achieve such figures within a few months, indicating that Qualcomm's System on Chips (SoCs) and demand levels may not align with retail expectations.
Furthermore, Qualcomm is now focusing on the "budget segment" to bolster its revenue, with the firm's CFO affirming its commitment to launching notebooks priced at around $600, utilizing yet-to-be-announced entry-level SoCs.
A primary concern with Qualcomm's current notebooks has been their relatively high pricing compared to market offerings, particularly in light of competitors. By introducing budget-friendly solutions, Qualcomm has the potential to attract considerable attention.
Being an investors’ conference, Qualcomm refrained from disclosing extensive technical specifics, aside from hinting at the forthcoming third-generation Oryon CPU cores, which are projected to demonstrate significantly enhanced performance compared to earlier models, though official performance metrics have yet to be revealed. As a newcomer in the notebook arena, Qualcomm has undoubtedly made notable strides regarding market adoption rates; however, there remains considerable work ahead.
