Arctic guarantees its LGA1700 coolers are compatible with Intel's next-gen LGA1851 socket

PC cooling giant Arctic assured its customers with LGA1700 processors that their existing Arctic coolers are fully compatible with the upcoming LGA1851 socket for Core Ultra 200 (codenamed Arrow Lake) processors.  These Arrow Lake chips are expected to arrive in late October and slot into the new LGA1851 socket. Arctic said on its blog, "According to current information, the mechanical dimensions remain unchanged." The company added, "Arctic has assured customers since last year that all coolers purchased from October 23 onwards will support the new socket." Although the LGA1851 socket will have more pins than the LGA1700 socket, its exterior dimensions will allegedly remain the same. Although we've heard rumors that you could reuse your current LGA1700 cooler, Arctic is among the first to confirm this officially. This means users upgrading to the Arrow Lake chips and the corresponding Z890 motherboard (reportedly set to be revealed on October 10) can save

Assign Control Center Functions to Your iPhone's Action Button

The Action button, introduced with the iPhone 15 Pro models and now featured on all iPhone 16 models, offers users a customizable hardware button for quick access to various functions. With iOS 18, Apple has expanded its capabilities to include Control Center functions, which could potentially increase its utility for many users. Despit e its versatility, user adoption of the Action button has been mixed. For example, in April 2024 a MacRumors survey of iPhone 15 Pro users revealed that while some found the button a "game changer," particularly for activating custom Shortcuts, over half of respondents often forgot the button is even there. The most common uses among those who did use it included activating the camera or flashlight – functions already accessible via the default Lock screen. However, the new ability to assign Control Center functions to the Action button may change its reception, and could address common criticisms about its limited usefulness. By provi

One small trick changed my opinion of the Bellroy Leather Pixel 9 case

Bellroy Leather case for Google Pixel 9 If you want a leather case for the Google Pixel 9, the Bellroy Leather case is as good as it gets. There aren’t many brands making leather cases for phones outside of Apple’s lineup, but Bellroy is among the few. The Bellroy Leather case is the best leather case you can get for the Pixel 9 series , but when I got one in to test, I was not impressed. Sure, it felt incredible to hold. It’s remarkably thin and the leather felt as premium as you’d imagine from a full-grain leather case. The gentle slope around the camera bar completely removes any hard edges, making it even more comfortable than the naked phone. It even smelled great! But one thing absolutely killed it for me: the buttons. They looked great and perfectly matched the color of the leather, but they were incredibly stiff. So stiff that after a day of using it, I wrote off the case entirely. I can deal with the limited durability and protection, but unusable buttons? Absolutely not

Intel Lunar Lake CPU gets die annotation — four Skymont E-cores slightly bigger than one Lion Cove P-core

Die shots of Intel's latest Core Ultra 200V (codenamed Lunar Lake) CPUs have been analyzed and annotated, revealing the size and location of the mobile chip's components. Photographed by GeekerWan and 万扯淡 and annotated by hardware expert Nemez, the images deeply dive into Lunar Lake's tiniest parts in the compute, platform controller, and base tiles. The first two tiles are fabbed on TSMC's 3nm and 6nm nodes, respectively, while the base tile alone is fabbed at Intel on the 22nm node. Lunar Lake is oriented towards laptops. The quad-core Lion Cove P-core cluster, the NPU, and the Xe2 integrated GPU are all the same size. The media engine, display engine, and memory controller are smaller, unlike in higher-end processors, where they're almost a footnote in size. Lunar Lake also has a quad-core cluster of Skymont-based E-cores, and the die annotation indicates that the entire cluster is just a little larger than a single Lion Cove core. This isn' t surprising

U.S. enacts law to exempt select fabs from environmental reviews

President Joe Biden has enacted a law that exempts certain U.S. semiconductor manufacturing facilities, funded under the CHIPS & Science Act, from undergoing additional federal environmental assessments, reports Reuters. This move is intended to speed up the approval process and prevent potential delays for projects already in progress. The new law prevents fab projects from being subjected to extra reviews under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) 1969. Proponents of the legislation argue that these projects already comply with existing federal, state, and local environmental regulations, and the added NEPA reviews could have delayed them for years. However, some environmental groups oppose the law, arguing that NEPA reviews are crucial for ensuring things like the safety of workers and communities potentially exposed to hazardous materials used in semiconductor production. Under the new law, the Department of Commerce has the authority to act as the lea d agency for

Pine64 StarPro64 is a single-board PC with an EIC7700X RISC-V processor featuring a 20 TOPS NPU

Pine64 is a company that's best known for making cheap, hacker-friendly laptops, smartphones, single-board computers, and other products powered by ARM-based processors. But for the last few years the company has been dabbling in products featuring RISC-V chips. And the new StarPro64 is the company's most powerful RISC-V device to date. The upcoming single-board computer features an ESWIN EIC7700X processor with four 1.8 GHz RISC-V RV64GC processor cores, a 3D GPU, support for 8K video at up to 50 frames per second, and a neural processing unit with up to 19.95 TOPS of AI performance. 'Ted Lasso' to Return to Apple TV+ as Season Four Allegedly 'Confirmed'

Ted Lasso will be returning for a fourth season, according to Sigmund Judge, a writer at MacStories and co-host of the Magic Rays of Light podcast. In a social media post today, Judge said he has confirmed that pre-production of the smash-hit Apple TV+ comedy series will begin in January in London, England. Apple has yet to confirm the fourth season, and there is no set release date yet. The third season of Ted Lasso ran from March through May of 2023. Ted Lasso, played by Jason Sudeikis, is a small-time football coach from Kansas who is hired to coach a professional soccer team in England, despite having no experience coaching soccer. The series has won several major awards since it debuted in 2020, with its overall positive tone proving especially comforting during the COVID-19 pandemic. Given how immensely popular Ted Lasso is, its long-rumored fourth season apparently being confirmed is a huge win for Apple TV+.

Motorola launches ThinkPhone25 as a durable, mid-range phone for business customers

Lenovo acquired IBM's PC business in 2005. Nine years later the company bought Motorola's smartphones business from Google. And in 2023 the company brought its two brands together to launch the Lenovo ThinkPhone by Motorola, a $700 smartphone with a ThinkPad-inspired design and a few business-friendly security features. Now the company has introduced a new model with a similar design, but a few changes that suggest the company may be looking to lower the price tag rather than to boost performance. The new model is called the ThinkPhone 25, and it has the same Aramid Fiber material on the back cover and, like its predecessor, it's designed with durability in mind. Both phones are MIL-STD-810H tested and rated IP68 for dust and water resistance. But the new model comes with one thing that last year's model lacked: a promise that Motorola will deliver at least five major OS updates as well as five years of security updates, which means that this phone will be sup
